Cutting the siren, she got out of the car to view the wreckage. The ambulance was already leaving, sirens quiet. The uniform had the scene documented.

“No mystery here?”

“ No. The driver says he just didn’t see the stop sign. Kept going. “

“ There’s more to it,” the detective said, “else I wouldn’t be here. Drugs? Alcohol?”

“ No,” the officer said. “ Night shift.”

Softening her gaze so that the world as it is drifted away like smoke. The driver reeked of dreaming, of drifting, of being elsewhere; of children, a meal, sleep, sleep…

“He just fell asleep,” she said. “That’s all.”
